52 things in 52 weeks

So as if trying to achieve a list of 10 New Year’s Resolutions wasn’t hard enough, I decided to join my friend Jo in attempting to complete a list of 52 things in 52 weeks. It’s our take of the 101 things in 1001 days, since a) we weren’t really patient enough to challenge ourselves to do something for 1001 days, and b) 52 things in 52 weeks has a nice ring to it.

It differs from the New Years Resolutions in that they can be a lot less “monumental”, and smaller everyday things that we tend to overlook – like a candelight dinner for example. The best one out of the list is that for each thing we haven’t completed at the end of the year we have to donate $5 to charity, so someone will be benefiting from our laziness at least! My list is as follows (and will be updated with links as I complete each item):

  1. Get a skin cancer check
  2. Get a breast lump check
  3. Splurge on five matching sets of bras/underwear (1, 2)
  4. Celebrate the 12 days of Christmas
  5. Run 100kms over the course of the year (tracked using a GPS iPhone app)
  6. Raise money for charity
  7. Quit my job
  8. Learn the thriller dance and perform it on October 29th for Thrill the World
  9. Go for a night out and dance
  10. Swim 500m continuously
  11. Blog each 52 in 52 challenge and donate $5 for each thing not completed (if all tasks are completed this task is completed)
  12. Watch my 5 favourite movies within 24 hours
  13. Have a candlelit dinner
  14. Learn to locate major countries on a map (by scoring a minimum of 125,000 points in the Traveller IQ online quiz)
  15. Send a package to a friend I’ve been out of touch with
  16. Go to a pub trivia night
  17. Go to a standup comedy night
  18. Attend a concert
  19. Do 50 pushups straight (Kel on feet, Jo on knees)
  20. Go to the casino and play a table game
  21. Read 8 novels, including 2 recommended by Jo (Book 1, Book 2, Book 3, Book 4)
  22. Sit and read a book in a park
  23. Go to a gay bar
  24. Go for a day trip on my bicycle
  25. Climb a tree
  26. Donate blood
  27. Do something nice for a stranger – pay it forward
  28. Colour in a picture to send to someone to display on their fridge
  29. Build a snow or sand sculpture
  30. Host a themed party
  31. Make sushi
  32. Work out every day for 2 weeks straight
  33. Create a scrapbook
  34. See a sunrise 5 times (sunrise 1)
  35. Knit a scarf
  36. Take a trip on a train
  37. Create a home-made calendar for my mum
  38. Send a message in a bottle
  39. Stick to a budget for a month
  40. List 12 things I like about myself
  41. Have a goofy photobooth picture taken
  42. Go to the movies alone – 3 times (1)
  43. Grow some herbs and use them in cooking
  44. Pay for a professional massage
  45. Go without internet for an entire weekend while at home (i.e. can’t consider this task resolved if I have gone away camping for a weekend, or somewhere where phone/internet reception is not available)
  46. Go for one month without drinking coffee (coke for Jo)
  47. Start a swear jar and donate to it for every swear word said in a particular month
  48. Go geocaching (http://www.geocaching.com)
  49. Complete Project 365 – a photo every day for the year
  50. Wear a dress out to dinner
  51. Go to a winery
  52. Buy unique headwear and wear it

The first 10 things on the list are different for Jo and I, but after that we both share the same list. It should be fun! Wish me luck!

  2. What a brilliant concept!
I’ve missed the first week, so will have to think creatively but this a definite ‘to do’ for 2011.
