52 in 52: 3096 Days – Natascha Kampush

To be totally truthful, I actually finished this a bit over a week ago. It’s the story of Natascha, who was abducted in Austria when she was only 10  years old. She was held captive for an astounding 8 years, during which time she built up a complex relationship with her kidnapper. Eventually, she made her escape into freedom.

I wouldn’t say the book is exactly “gripping”, there’s no big cliff hangers at the end of each chapter that keep you on the edge and make you want to read more. However, the book is incredibly interesting, and you will still easily be compelled to finish it. I won’t do a full review, since I’m definitely not literary critic, however I definitely think the book is worthwhile reading. More information on the book can be found at the official Penguin Publishers website.

The Strangerhood

Okay, so I’ve been really slack in posting anything new. And for anyone who keeps hoping that I will be posting something worth reading in the next couple of days, this post will disappoint you.

We recently upgraded to the unlimited 512 broadband plan, so now I’m going download crazy. This means that I finally get to download the series of “movies” that I’ve wanted for a long time, called “The Strangerhood“. The official site for The Sims 2 describes The Strangerhood:

Rooster Teeth Production, the creators of the popular redvsblue online movie series, have developed an online series comedy called “The Strangerhood” set in The Sims 2.

The story centers around a group of eclectic characters all suffering from amnesia. For reasons unknown to them, they have been gathered together in a mysteriously remote suburban neighborhood, with seemingly no way in or out.

Throughout the season, the characters will attempt to figure out who they are, why they have been brought together, and just exactly who is behind this bizarre experiment.

There is currently 6 episodes available, and they’re normally about 20mb in size. For anyone who is acquainted with The Sims 2, the Stangerhood uses the Sims 2 program to create the series. Now while the image quality isn’t exactly fantastic, it is great quality for a free movie. Pay, and you’ll receive top notch.

I have heard people raving about these movies, and finally took the opportunity to get the first one tonight. I watched it, and thought it was bloody hilarious! So I got the remaining 5 as well. The characters are all stereotypes; old mean guy, young weed smoker guy, dork guy, shallow chick who wants someone with money, fairly normal girl, foreign weird guy etc etc.

If you take this series on a light hearted note, then it’s great viewing. If you expect something really great, then you’ll be disappointed. My favourite part was in Episode 5, where “Wade” (he’s wearing a name tag that says “hi my name is wade” but he swears his name is Darnt) is trying to explain how this chick died, and first he says she got swarmed by flesh eating wasps, but the dork guy disagrees because she still has her skin. So then he comes up with all these other ways, including getting electrocuted for no reason, and she yells out ‘oh crap, electricity!’ Guess you gotta see it.

Each episode goes for about 4 minutes, and there’s more to be released in the future. The series have also been endorsed by Electronic Arts, as there’s a link on their official Sims 2 Website under “Cool Stuff”, and has counted over 20,000 downloads for one episode. I think Episode 1 reached about 40,000!!

Anyway, check it out.

Ladder 49

Last night I went and saw Ladder 49. Since John Travolta was in Grease, there has only been a few movies of his that I have truly wanted to see (can anyone remember the horror that became a movie called “Michael“? And I can honestly say “Look Who’s Talking” is not a major favourite either). Swordfish, on the other hand, was a movie that I simply HAD to see and I was not disappointed. Wonderful combination – Travolta and Hugh Jackman. Superb. Did anyone else see them sing the song “Summer Loving” on Rove?

This time, John takes to the screen with Joaquin Phoneix (brother of the late River – had to include that, although Joaquin is making a name for himself), and the chemistry is apparent.

Joaquin is a firefighter, and John his captain. Joaquin gets trapped in a building seconds after saving the life of another, and during his struggle to save himself, we see flashbacks of his life, from the time of meeting a girl who turns to his wife, and his children.

It’s a gripping story, I loved it. The movie pays tribute to firefighters everywhere, and I can only assume, correctly shows their dedication and bravery in reporting to work each and every day, knowing that there could be a day where the red car draws up to their home, for the captain to inform their partner of their demise.

I saw the promotion for this movie on Oprah, where John flew some firefighters to the set for the show, and later invited them to his premier. They had saved the life of another firefighter in a fire earlier that year. Their story brought John to tears – what legends, and what A legend.

During this movie, I was accompanied by friends, one of which who needed a kleenex box herself. But I just can’t truly reiterate enough, go see this movie!! Well worth the money.

Scar Tissue

scar tissue.jpgI was reading reviews of this book today, and I’m greatly disappointed. Reviews from those “high up” in the publishing world make it look as though they have just completely missed the point. I feel as though the book is more about describing his (Anthony Keidis, lead singer of Red Hot Chilli Peppers) battle with drugs, and not about the band. Thus you can see the deeper meaning of the title of the book.

One critic said that A.K. did not go far enough with describing his lyrics, but I don’t think he needed to. Review the lyrics and compare them with his life at the time and it’s fairly obvious what it was about. Geez.

But the book is fantastic and compelling and everything I hoped it would be, and a big cheers goes to my sister for getting it for me for Christmas (the hot chocolate has also been used up, and the cup is MINE. Mat gets another cup, so I’m stoked because I have the biggest!! haha).

And I guess I’ll be bringing this with me when I next come to Brisbane to pass it onto you???
