New Years Resolutions

resolute.gifI never make new years resolutions, because I’ve never had anything good. I’ve always thought “lose weight” or “work out” or “make money” and I’m pretty sure that at least once during that entire year I would have managed to accomplish all of them.

But what’s the point of making them if they’re not detailed, and it’s something that you really want (or need) to do.

So this year, I’ve gone all out. I’ve made 10 and I’ve printed it out and made it look ultra pretty. It’s on a wall in the bedroom so I see it every morning. I’m also publishing it on my blog, so if I fail, it’s a public failure. So the pressure is on. As I accomplish them (if I haven’t already) I will blog it.

Wanna see my list? Read on.

I made a list of 5 categories of which my 5 resolutions would be shared amongst. The categories were:

Charity
Hobbies
Health
Financial
Relationship

Charity
1 – Donate blood
Every time I pass the Red Cross blood donation trailer in Kawana I always say I’m going to go and do it. But I never did. So this year I promised I would do it.

COMPLETED – This was completed the first week of the new year. I was still on my Christmas holidays bored out of my brain, was on the way home from somewhere one day and saw it, and thought “Oh I should do that!”. I was chatting to my mate on the internet, and decided I would do it. Rang them up and they said “well come down now” so BOOYAH I was there and had it done. Also found out I have low blood pressure in the process so hey! I’ve now registered for the regular doner club, and every 3 months they will remind me that I’m eligible to donate again (can’t do it any sooner or it affects the body’s iron levels).

Hobbies
2 – Buy a guitar
Towards the end of 2005 I heard lots of acoustic songs that I just wished I could play and sing along to by myself. So why not add it as a resolution??

COMPLETED – Anyone who has read my previous posts in the past few days would see that I got a guitar for my birthday. I’ve started playing a few songs I used to i.e. American Pie (Don McLean), When I Come Around (Green Day), Polly (Nirvana), the opening tune of Under the Bridge (Red Hot Chilli Peppers) and a few more….having an absolute ball doing so!!

3 – Go Hang Gliding at Double Island Point with Chere
This is something that we’ve said we’d love to do since our Easter holiday to Double Island point last year. At the moment Chere is very much pregnant so it’s a out of the question, at least until September or so. It will be nice and warm, and newborn Jack Garland will have to put up with not having his mum around for an afternoon *grin*. Looking foward to it.

Health
This is where it gets a bit difficult….

4 – Get my first pap smear test
I believe you’re meant to start having these once you turn 18 and you’re sexually active. I’m 22 and sexually active, and never had one. Not good. It’s just that I’m not real fond of the idea of someone (other than Mat) (sorry, was that too far??) playing around down there….But this year I’m going to have to bite the bullet and just get it over and done with. Then I’ve got two years up my sleeve to complain about the next one.

5 – Lose 3kg and keep it off until next year
So remember that I went to weight watchers and had a life changing experience? Let’s just say my will is not strong enough yet. I’ve put all the weight back on, if not a little more. Thus I’ve woken up and started being healthy again, and since I will be joining the gym shortly, it should fall off *fingers crossed*. Which leads me to my next resolution.

6 – Join the gym
I think I should have thought a little harder before writing this one.Originally it was “join the gym for a year”. If I had kept that the way it was, it’s impossible for me to achieve it until next year, which kind of sucks. So I’ve changed it. But I’ve quit netball (shock horror – and I also partially attribute to my weight gain) and Suncoast Fitness have just moved to new premises about 5 minutes walk from my home so soon as I’ve got the money I’ll be there my friend!

Financial
7 – Get a payrise
Now c’mon, who really doesn’t want that!! But I can feel it coming, there’s already been discussions about my contract and upping my pay as I don’t get RDO’s anymore (never took em anyway so I don’t really care). But getting a pay rise would helpd me with the next 2 points!!

8 – Make a budget and stick to it
This is another one that is sort of ongoing, but I think at the end of the year if I have managed to accomplish the next bit then I should be able to cross this one off the list. Thanks to Pauline, I’ve got an excellent spreadsheet that I’ve been using to track my expenses, and it’s already helped me this month. However, having our wages changed to month kinda threw me off as at the start of February and my first monthly pay I had double the bills to pay (survived January one fortnights pay). Next month should be better.

9 – Pay $3,000 off my car loan & credit cards
I’m waiting for Mum, Amy and Pauline to spin out on this one. But if I can accomplish this, I will almost be debt free. Well that’s dreaming, I’ll still have a couple of grand left on the car loan, but I took the loan out for 5 years so I’ve still got 3 or 4 years left on that…in 2010 my resolution will be “finish paying off car loan and buy a Ferrari because you’re so rich and awesome”.

Relationship
We went on a holiday to Sydney last year, end of this year we’ll be going to Cairns for a week to visit Mat’s dad who just recently moved up there. But I’ve still put this down that Mat and I go away somewhere really nice for the weekend.

So that’s the list. We’re two months into the year, and I’ve got two of them accomplished. I think my best bet for getting one done next month would be….ah crap, it will have to be the pap smear *sigh*. Who thought up this bloody resolutions idea!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Hey dude! Fantastic Blogging – I’ve been so busy at work I didn’t even realise…. so now I’ve commented on nearly all of them… Comments – fantastic resolutions! Pap smears aren’t too scary (had my first one ever last year). Goodluck on the rest of it! You can do it!

  2. Hey, its great that you are even getting some resolutions together, and even better that you have already started achieving some of them!!! *jealous*. Hmm, the only one I really have for myself is to lose SOME weight before my holidays. The holiday is the only thing really that is motivating me to do it tho :( So you gotta help me ok? You help me and I’ll help u :) .
