It’s tough taking a different photo every single day

This year I thought I would challenge myself to take a photo every day of the year, and publish it on my blog, flickr, and Facebook. Not only would I be able to provide my friends and family with a glimpse of my life each day, but more importantly, I would really be challenging myself as a photographer. At the end of the year, I would have a collection of 365 photos that I was proud of, and could possibly even turn into a coffee table book for myself, a way to remember the year. That was my hope anyway.

I’m only 14 days in, and I’m already starting to feel a little bit of a strain. It’s been quite a jump to go from not taking a single photo for almost a year, to carrying my camera with me everywhere. I’m also finding it a small challenge to stick with a deadline, another minor issue that I need to attend to. So far I’ve really only missed it once, though technically it fit within the guidelines. I had taken a photo that day, I just hadn’t published it online. Given there may be times when I’m not at the computer (camping/travelling for example), it would be unrealistic to expect I would be able to publish a photo every single day. Previously, I would just say “meh, I’m not really in the mood to do any photography today, so I won’t”. I don’t have the luxurywith this challenge, although to be honest procrastinating isn’t my greatest issue.

The biggest problem for me is the style of photo. I confess it, loud and clear, here for everyone to see.

My name is Kelly, and I am a macro junkie.

I LOVE taking macro photos. I love photos with a strong depth of field. I love images that have such high levels of detail the photos almost become abstract. I love it all. Yet I know that a set of 365 macro photos would be damn boring. I’m definitely trying different styles, heck I spent almost 4 hours on a day of my holidays simply trying to take a self portrait, my most hated form of photography. I just don’t know how to photograph people. But back to my point. Whenever I go to pick up the camera for the first time on a new day, I find myself looking around me and imagining thousands of different macro images.

I know with time I will hopefully be able see more than just a close up, I’m just impatient. I have no intentions of giving up on this challenge. I just never expected it to be this difficult.

I’m a macro junkie too. I’m on Day 259 and I promise it gets so much easier after Day 20 or so. In fact, I think my macro lens is the first one I go to when I’m in a rut on Project 365. Get past day 25 or 30 and then decide.

Your photos look great. I wish I was motivated enough to do a photo a day.

You should try some long exposure shots and light painting. The good thing about long exposure shots is that you can do them at night after work. No getting up early to see the sunrise. :)

You’ve probably seen these, but they are great inspiration.

I would totally love to but unfortunately I’m still only using a point and shoot camera, and the longest exposure I can do is 4 seconds. I would totally love to try light painting one day though!!

I think you should try more people shots then. Try asking a stranger – but without getting them to pose for a normal smiley shot.

I don’t think I have the balls to do that. There’s a photographer on the Sunshine Coast who I follow on Flickr, and she’s taken some pretty amazing people shots around the coast. Just quick snaps that she’s taken when she’s been out and about, and they’re in an unobtrusive way. People’s feet for example. Non-identifying photos. Maybe I could give that a crack?

I’m also going to try some more landscape shots, especially on the weekends. It means I get out of the house more.
