Weekend of football

Oh boy, what a most awesome weekend ahead.

Tonight, as I write this post I am watching the Adelaide v Melbourne game in the A-League (I only cheer for Harry Kewell tho). Tomorrow morning I head to the beach for 5 hours of lifesaving patrol, before watching Brisbane take on Sydney in the soccer again.

Sunday we have the Trans-Tasman test (Australia v New Zealand) in the Rugby League before the same two nations go head-to-head again in the Rugby Union World Cup semi final. Important bragging rights there! Those two games will be viewed in amongst a BBQ at C’s house with friends.

So yes, it’s definitely the weekend of football!! I guess I will need to get my rest when I can; I’ve got lots of cheering to do! Go Harry/Brisbane/Australia/Australia!!!

He’s not quite a soccer fan…yet

Last night I went around to a friend’s place to watch the Socceroos v Oman game, another one of the world cup qualifying matches. It was an entertaining game with some great saves and goals, and we ended up winning 3-0. Can’t complain about that!

C came around to watch it as well, and at the end of the night you could tell he was slightly relieved it was over. He absolutely loves his sports, but I think if there was something else on offer to do that evening he may very well have done that instead. He hasn’t quite fallen for the game yet, but that’s fine. I’m not going to push it on him, and I’m happy to go to the games with my friends that enjoy it. I have to give him props for trying though. I do hope that my love for the sport will rub off on him eventually, and I know that if my team got into the finals he wouldn’t hesitate in coming to that; during the season I don’t think he’s all that keen. It’s also a bonus that the soccer season is on during the NRL off-season, otherwise I wouldn’t have a hope in hell of getting him to watch anything other than handegg.

He also doesn’t understand how I can talk or use my phone during the game and not miss anything that’s going on. He’s certain that I’m not watching it, but every time he’s asked me what just happened I haven’t been wrong (the moment will come, I’m sure). I guess he hasn’t figured out just how good I can be at multi-tasking when the situation calls for it :)

One day he’ll understand how amazing women are.

Wine does this

Oh boy, do I have a headache today! Last night I went to a friend’s place, where we unfortunately witnessed the Broncos lose against Manly. This means that I’ll be seeing the Manly Sea Eagles play next weekend when I make my way to Sydney for the NRL Grand Final. Boo. The three other people that I’m going to the final with are all Broncos supporters, so had they won last night it would have been a dream for my friends. Alas it was not to be.

One quick note – although I have not always been a Broncos supporter myself, I do think that Darren Lockyer is incredible (he WAS my beloved Maroons captain after all) and I think he still leaves the game as a legend in history. I’m proud to have witnessed him play in his final state of origin, and I wish I could have seen him play in his last grand final.

But back to my night last night.

After the game finished, and we were well on our way to drunksville, we decided to start searching on youtube for random keywords to see what videos we would come across. It was interesting to say in the least! We watched videos of things like a woman accidentally leaving poo on the counter of her one night stand, some guy calling himself Swift Karate Chop (seriously wtf is with him), and a boring blowtorch experiment (I can’t even find the video today, hopefully it got taken down after sending too many people to sleep).

Eventually we got tired and went to bed.

My present to myself this morning was one big-ass headache. Looks like someone forgot to have any water yesterday!

In typical Kelly form, I didn’t let myself just lay down and sit it out. Instead, I got up and went to the local swimming pool at the ungodly hour of 7.30am (it is a Saturday after all). I had committed to another friend I would go down for some laps since we didn’t have training this morning. When I got there I was a bit wobbly and didn’t feel too good, but the water felt amazing once I jumped in. I felt revived, and managed to get through about 600m worth of laps (with breaks in between to have a chat). Next swim though I want to do more than that with less breaks, I know I can do more easily, but being hungover just made it a bit harder this morning. I should have stayed in the pool too, because as soon as I got out I instantly felt hung over again. Bugger :-(

As soon as I got home I made myself some breakfast, ate it, then promptly passed out in bed for a few hours of beautiful, beautiful sleep. Now I find myself in front of the computer blogging my story, and not exactly sure what I’m going to do with myself this afternoon. I think I might crash out in front of the telly for an hour or so, and maybe take Missy down to the beach. I should probably wash my car at some point, it’s pretty dirty.

Being lazy….wine does this.

I’m going to the third state of origin!

Oh my goodness I am so excited. It turns out that C has some tickets to the State of Origin game next Wednesday, and asked if I was interested in going. Trick question really – we’ve already discussed our joint passion for the Maroons (QLD side), and he came over for the second game, meeting my friends in the process. He knew there was never any doubt of whether I was coming or not – I was there the minute he asked.

It’s always been a dream of mine to go to one of the State of Origin games. For people who aren’t familiar with the game, it’s a special series held within the NRL (National Rugby League) season. It’s three games, winner is the best of three. Players are selected based on which state where they first played football. The game is only held between Queensland (also known as the Maroons or Cane Toads) and New South Wales (called Blues or Cockroaches), and held every year. It’s a huge event, and around the time of the game it’s not uncommon to see the best of friends arguing over who is going to win. It’s a game of intense passion.

This year the third game is going to be bigger than ever. The series is currently drawn at one game each, so the outright winner will be determined by the third game. QLD have won the last 5 series in a row, and in past years NSW never really looked like much of a threat. This year there is a good chance of them winning, so they’re more desperate than ever, while QLD are dreaming of what it would be like to clinch 6-in-a-row. The embarrassment factor for the blues is a great motivator.

The third game is also going to be the final State of Origin game for one of the QLD greats, Darren Lockyer, as he retires from the squad at the end of this series.

Darren Lockyer (born 24 March 1977) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer and current captain of the Australian national team, the Queensland State of Origin team and his NRL club, the Brisbane Broncos. All three of these teams Lockyer has led to success in their respective competitions culminating in winning all 3 competitions in 2006. In 2009 he broke the record for most games and in 2010 the most tries for the Australian national team. He is a multiple-premiership winner, a Clive Churchill Medallist and also became only the second player to have won the Golden Boot award twice. He is considered by many as the greatest player to have played the game.

  • Part of the Series Winning Sides in 1998, 2001, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010 (also drawn series in 1999 and 2002)
  • Captain of the Series Winning Sides in 2001, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010.

The game is a sell out. The last time I was at Suncorp Stadium with a sell-out crowd was for the A-League grand final last season, so I know exactly how magical a vocal Suncorp Stadium can be. I’ve lived and breathed the State of Origin series since I was a kid, and it’s difficult to explain the amount of passion I have for my team.

I can’t wait.

Go the maroons!

351/365 - The Beach: QLD's Shame

The boxing day derby between Brisbane Roar and Gold Coast United. Thankfully the stadium opened up extra tiers for all the crowd so that we were all able to stay out of the rain. The only ones who didn’t were the diehard fans, that were next to the field cheering to their teams.

This banner is the sledge of the year, it was brilliant. If you’re not sure what it’s about, the Gold Coast supporter’s bay is called “The Beach”.
