What I learned today baking cookies

Yesterday I was doing some google reading, when I read a post on Jenn.nu about thanksgiving. In the post, she talked about baking a batch of “these amazing cookies”. I have an extremely sweet tooth, and couldn’t resist clicking on the link. She was right, they sounded pretty darn amazing – Mrs Fields Cinnamon Sugar Butter Cookies. Catch is that I’m not exactly well suited to the kitchen (I think there’s a requirement that you’re meant to know how to cook) but hey, I’ll never improve if I never try, right? So I decided I would give it a crack as well.

I figured that if I had a spare moment over the weekend that I could put some on to bake, which I could then perhaps enjoy with a coffee (while doing my assignment perhaps – bad Kelly for not working on it right this moment actually). I woke up this morning, and suddenly had the craving to bake, so looked up the recipe, went to the shops and came home.

20mins later I had the biggest batch of cookie mix I had ever seen. Then I realised I should have read the bottom of the recipe, where it said it makes 36 cookies. I probably would have re-thought making it, since we only have a small oven and I don’t think we really have a need for 36 cookies (I’m meant to be dieting, oopsies). Yet it was too late, I had some mixture to bake! On the plus side, Mat will have a lot of cookies to take with him to work this week :-)

So I’ve done the hard work, I’ve made the cookies, and this is how they turned out:

Cookies!!!

A big plate full of extremely tasty cookies

And what did I learn?

  • Cookies have a TON of sugar in them! HOLY MOLY! But a huge hint to that fact was the cookies having the word “sugar” in the title – um, duh?
  • Making cookies on a hot day means that when you’re rolling the mixture into balls, be prepared for the mixture to melt a little bit, and to have super sticky (but amazing tasting) hands.
  • Be prepared to make a TON of cookies! HOLY MOLY!
  • Baking cookies means you will have an incredible smelling house.
  • Fiance’s make excellent help by eating the cookie mixture (the more he eats the less I bake – win/win).
  • I am still totally loving my new(ish) toaster oven – everything cooks just so well
  • I might just be starting to enjoy this cooking thing

Definitely tons of fun though, and now that I have a big bag of dark brown sugar in the house I might just take note of the chocolate slice recipe on the side and give that a crack next weekend! Stay tuned for more adventures of “Kelly in the kitchen trying not to poison anyone”.
