Another win for the SCTUB crew at trivia

Every Wednesday night, friends and I get together and the Pig & Whistle in Maroochydore for a catch up and to play some free trivia on offer. It’s a great way to catch up with people I wouldn’t normally have the chance to socialise with in my everyday life, as well as challenge myself intellectually. It’s great fun!

Last night we headed down as usual, and managed to pull out a win! We also took 2nd place last week, so with both 1st & 2nd place prizes combined we now have a total of $75 in vouchers – awesome! There’s going to be a lot of food on the table to share around next week.

Notable events from the night were Kathryn getting a Justin Bieber question right (she was proud), all of us doubting Sarah when she said that The Big Bang Theory was situated in Pasadena (she was correct, and thankfully we had written it down), and Tina pulling out another few great answers about the English Premier League. Brilliant work team!

Meanwhile, when talking to Jake I said I thought Pasadena was more like a dessert, meaning desert. Oops!

The winners (minus me) in all their post-victory glory

If anyone located around the Sunshine Coast is interested in joining us the offer is totally open to all. Look for the #sctub tag on twitter to see updates on gatherings, and feel free to drop me a comment on my blog or via  twitter.

52 in 52: Go to a pub trivia night

Last month, in an attempt to make new friends I organised a meet up for the local tweeps on the Sunshine Coast (tweeps are people who use twitter). It was a great night, and you can read more about it in my blog post here. We decided to make it a monthly thing, and having shown my new friends my list of 52 things we opted to make next month’s meet up at a trivia night. We discovered there was trivia on at the Pig & Whistle in Maroochydore on Wednesday nights, and agreed to meet there.

Contrary to the first SCTUB event I’d attended where there was just the four of us, we had managed to organise a group of 9 for the trivia. Unfortunately, one girl became ill on that day and pulled out, leaving the 8 of us:

As time progressed we discovered that 8 was definitely enough, as we were tied for second place after the first round! At this point it was evident that I wasn’t going to be of much use. When asked the question “name 5 nuts with six letters in their name” my first instinct was MACADAMIA! Clearly that’s more than six letters, DUH. However I freely shared my thought with the group so that we could all have a bit of a laugh at my expense. Honestly, if you can’t laugh at yourself…then you need to stop being so serious! The rest of the night someone would randomly say macadamia to a question, and we would all find it funny. For a while, then it got a bit old. Until a few days later when Sarah sent me a link to this:

But back to trivia.

We managed to win a free drink from the bar, as well as a packet of lollies courtesy of Talia’s excellent effort in the heads or tails game. As the game progressed we found that each of us had roles: me, the goofy idiot who can’t come up with a correct answer (on further reflection I realised that I did offer the correct answer of Iggy Pop for the images question!), Talia/Kathryn/Sarah/Luke/Jake/Tina all answering questions, and Lea who was putting up with mine & Tina’s crazy antics at the end of the table.

We learned several things during the course of the night, namely that parts of Russia are considered to be part of Europe (WHAT?!) and that Tina and I suck at answering the most obvious of A-League questions that we should have known. Lea actually revoked our A-League supporter licenses for a while there. I’m determined to make up for it next time. We also learned that macadamia doesn’t have six letters.

At the end of the night we were stoked to discover we had come second, which meant we also won a $20 bar voucher!

Oh yeah winnings!

We had all had so much fun that we decided we would make it a regular weekly get-together. The challenge now for me personally is to actually get some knowledge that will help the team. I don’t think first aid or chemistry is going to feature much, so unless they ask what you need to do if you get bitten by a red-back, or what the molecular mass of oxygen is, then I might not be much use. Time to start googling the latest sports stories in case that helps out!
